Chapter 15

“You’re a good detective, but I would really appreciate it if you could act a little bit interested in this investigation.” Donovan muttered between sips of her coffee.

“Most partners would be happy that they have someone to play ‘good cop, bad cop’ with. Doing you a favor, Donovan.” Moore cooly replied, still scribbling on his paper.

Donovan knew better than anybody else that Detective Steven Moore didn’t have to play bad cop—that’s who he was. Probably one of those entitled pricks who grew up thinking they could be the main character of every cop movie. But who was going to do the heavy lifting? Who was going to help the main character crack the case? The side characters. That’s why he had more arrests than her. She did the heavy lifting, and she was quickly trying to get over that. “Stop scribbling in that damn thing.”

Moore lifted his head, eyes wide with surprise. “You cursed. You never curse.”

“Your bad attitude is rubbing off on me,” she said, glumly.

“Good. One step closer to being a real cop, sweetheart.” Moore chewed on his pen.

Something in Donovan’s stomach twisted, and she had to turn and look at the door to hide her scowl. She felt her fingers close around the door handle and a foot slip out the door. She caught herself wondering why she hadn’t decided to become a schoolteacher or a dancer or any other female dominated field. She resented those moments. It made her weak. It made her want to fight for her spot that much more. She pulled her foot back inside and instead popped her head out, calling for the next person to come in and answer her questions.

They had already interviewed Sammy Rodriguez and Derek Sanders in the last hour. The pair had been no help. They didn’t see anything suspicious, nor did they think anything of the investigation. Sammy had said “Maybe it was some freak accident.” Donovan had nodded simply at that. If only it were a simple accident, she thought to herself. Donovan felt as though perhaps it wasn’t best to tell these teenagers just how brutally Stella was injured and how she was left for dead in the same place she had probably gone to get ice cream for years. Some freak accident, thought Donovan as Tyler Harrison walked through the doorway.

“Please, have a seat.”

He did as he was told. He was less shaky than the others. There was much more time for the news to sink in. It had been about three hours since they had summoned everyone to the precinct for questioning.

“Thank you for your patience.”

“Of course,” Tyler offered.

Donovan was taken aback by his attitude. He was sweeter than the others. Very polite. She wished everyone who ended up in that room was like him. She analyzed him in his flannel and band tee with jeans folded over at the ankles. They were wrinkled and probably unwashed, but somehow suited him and his untidy dark hair.

“How are you doing?”

“A little hungover, but I’ll live.
