It is possible to vary the fuse length of a grenade. The default setting for most grenades is five seconds, but this can be reduced to three or extended to seven or more by twisting the knob on the bottom. However, most people likely to chuck a grenade at you in a developing country won’t know this, which means you probably have five seconds between the handle being released (when the grenade is thrown) and the explosion. Theoretically, therefore, allowing for a quick throw and time of flight, you have time to do what they do in the movies—pick it up and throw it back. This is not recommended though. More important is to realize that you probably have a couple of seconds to look around, find some cover and dive behind it before the grenade goes off.
