Chapter 20

Out of everyone who showed interest in saying hello to Tara, only David and his girlfriend Kelsey were nice enough to engage in full conversation while they wandered the grounds and pretended to give a shit about the flowers in bloom.

It helped that Kelsey was only two years older than Tara and didn’t act like her shit didn’t stink. Which was a feat, since Kelsey was holy-shit supermodel gorgeous who looked like a historical player come to life in her 1950’s dress and kitten heels. Her tanned complexion was enough to beguile Tara into wondering if she would rather be Kelsey, or be with her.

Too bad Kelsey was soooo into her boyfriend, though. To be fair to David, he was a friendly guy who didn’t make Tara uncomfortable. His laugh was louder than anyone else around them, and the way he kept his distance from both Tara and his own girlfriend made her feel like she was speaking with old school friends instead of brand-new acquaintances.

“Is it true that you’re Astrid’s ex-boyfriend?” Tara asked in the midst of the rose garden. “I can hardly imagine it. I know she was married to a man but, you know her…”

“She’s kinda gay, yes.” David always said such things with a boisterous laugh, although at least in this instance he kept the volume down lower so everyone in a hundred yard radius didn’t hear them. “Astrid is very particular about her image. To everyone here, we were boyfriend and girlfriend. I did her a solid, you know. Set things up in a way that made people think we were sleeping together. It was her way of curbing rumors after her husband died. She didn’t care if people thought she was having an affair while ol’ Bernie was alive, but she did care about rumors regarding her being a loose woman while she took over parts of the company. I always told her it wasn’t such a big deal, but you have to know how she is by now. She has to be in control of everything, most of all her damned image.”

“It is a nice image,” Kelsey said. “I admit, though, it was a bit of a shock when I finally met this woman everyone told me was sleeping with my boyfriend. There was overlap between those rumors and when David and I started seeing each other,” she explained to Tara. “She was always super nice to me, though. Which is more than I can say for some people around here. Speaking of…” Kelsey stiffened as a middle-aged man with an obvious toupee and his mask somewhat askew on his face approached them. “Looks like you’ve got a friend, David.”

Although David’s smile wasn’t as big now, he still raised his hand in greeting and gave a “Heeey!” that implied he was best buds with everyone.

“Chauncey Savage! How are you? Did my dad kick your ass at the links last weekend?”

The man with a bit of a bulge wrapped an arm around David and jokingly threatened to give him a noogie.
