Sitka

Sitka, the former capital of Russian Alaska, is the only big city on Baranof Island, and it still reflects the culture of its former parent nation. The area was actually home to a community of Tlingit Indians before Alexander Baranof, manager of the Russian-American Company, built an outpost there in 1799 and helped his employer become the planet’s most profitable fur trader.

Today in Sitka you can enjoy Russian folk dances and see the icons at St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, or you can get to know more about the wildlife that has brought humans here for centuries. Along with fur seals, this includes birds—and the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka is Alaska’s foremost bald eagle hospital and educational institution. It treats as many as 200 birds each year and helps to educate visitors about the birds’ needs and environment.

Other excursions in Sitka include riding in a semisubmersible craft to see the wildlife beneath the ocean’s surface, exploring a salmon hatchery to see how the fish are raised, and mountain biking for experienced riders along rolling terrain and up to spectacular views that are well worth all the pedaling.
