Chapter 5

Sunday afternoon when Britney stepped out to attend her weekly Hot Yoga class, Dez made her phone call to Joe. She dialed the California area code and phone number knowing that it was a little bit earlier over there than it was in Dallas, she hoped that he would answer. She picked at the pieces of fabric that were falling off of her old pajama pants, listening to the rings. On the last possible ring he finally picked up the phone and answered in a groggy, fresh-out-bed tone.

“Hello?”

“Hey—did I wake you up?” Dez asked.

“Well that depends on what’s wrong,” he replied. They had been inseparable for years during high school and very little had changed, including his ability to determine when something was wrong with Dez. Joseph had been one of her only friends to stick by her when she was going through her transition and the realization that she liked girls. He was straight, but never once judged her for her decision which was the perfect friend that she needed in her life at that moment.

“I just need your opinion on something, nothing’s wrong really…” her voice trailed off realizing that if she didn’t fix her issues there would definitely be something ‘wrong’. “Alright, I take that back. Britney and I are having problems and it’s my fault and I need you to fix me.”

Joe coughed and laughed simultaneously on the other end of the phone. “That’s a tall order, tell me what happened.”

Dez took a deep breath and began, “So it started with me beating a guy up outside of a restaurant last week.”

“Wait—what?” Joe was clearly taken aback, the Dez he knew would never do that, “Damn, I do need to fix you. Continue.”

“Well a big group of them were staring at Brit and I while we were at dinner, they kept whispering about us and making fun of us throughout the meal and then finally they followed us out of the restaurant and verbally accosted us while we were waiting for a cab. I couldn’t handle it so I jumped on him. But that’s not even the worst part. Then, I didn’t want to leave the apartment at least not with Britney and then when we did, I told the waitress we would have separate checks because I was embarrassed.”

“Separate checks? Dez that’s not cool. Seriously what’s up with you? That just doesn’t seem like something you would do. You dated girls in Houston and this wasn’t a problem right? I mean it was never a problem in high school, not that you really were out yet but you hung out with girls in public and you didn’t freak out.”

“I know,” Dez replied, “Honestly, I don’t know what it is. No, it never really happened. I mean people stared but it didn’t affect me until I actually started thinking about it and what it meant. The staring goes straight into me and it makes me freak out.”

“Oh my god, people will always stare. You just have to figure out how to push it away.
