It’s a sweet kiss under the stars in the rain on top of a classic convertible.

We’re in love.

The heat is strong.

The chemistry is wild.

The kisses get deeper.

The moans ensue.

The sighs are loud.

The clothes get fewer.

And that’s when I woke up.

I wasn’t alone. I was still wrapped in Chase’s arms. He was snoring into my ear and I didn’t even mind. I found it pretty cute actually.

His hot breath against my cheek didn’t bother me as well. All these things that I always assumed would bother me in a relationship, even bothered me in past relationships, didn’t seem to bother me one bit with Chase. Nothing he’s done has driven me to push him away. I’m not used to that. It could be just a matter of time.

I try to slide out from under Chase when I woke him. It’s dark in the living room except for the light shining in from outside. He grunts as I slide out from under him to use the restroom. When I get back, I notice him sitting up patting the seat next to him.

“I thought you were sleeping,” I whisper as I slide back into his arms.

“You woke me up,” he grunts.

“I’m sorry, I had to pee,” I reply.

We’re comfortably snuggled against each other on my tiny sofa. Neither one of us suggests the bed – at this stage of the relationship, personally I think that’s still too intimate. I don’t really want to move too fast and it doesn’t feel like Chase feels any differently.

“I really care about you,” he murmurs in my ear.

I don’t say anything in return.

“I like every little thing about you. Your smile, the sounds you make when you sleep, the way your eyes light up at every little thing I say or do, your hair that smells like strawberry.”

I still don’t say anything.

“I like the bigger freckle on the left corner of your cheek, because it stands out just like you. I like your confidence, your pride, and the joy you bring to life.”

I finally answer him.

“And I like you.”

He chuckles, “after every little compliment I just made, that’s all I get?”

“Yep, because I wasn’t fishing for compliments, you willingly gave them up,” I smile.

“You’re a tease, woman,” he grins while his arms caress my shoulder in small circles, “and that’s another thing I like about you.”

Is it normal for people to be extra sentimental or loving during the night hours? Is it normal to be more open and vulnerable while surrounded by darkness and flickering city lights? If it is, then I love this normalcy.

“When I was little, I remember waking up one night from a nightmare, I couldn’t sleep, so I snuck into the kitchen to get something to drink. I thought I was quiet while being sneaky, I was sure I was going to get in trouble. Once I opened the fridge and got some milk, I closed it and found my dad standing there. It scared me half to death. I wasn’t in trouble. He didn’t yell.
