Chapter Seventeen

Everly swooped forward, catching Tammy with one arm, and thrusting her other out, lashing the weroth with a strand of light. It squealed, rearing back. Its long, spidery limb slurped back out of Tammy’s chest. The orb smacked onto the ground. Tammy’s full weight fell onto Everly, pressing her down onto the slippery stones. Energy crackled where Everly and Tammy’s flesh met, and Everly shifted her weight so her jacket created a barrier between them.

“Tammy?” she cried, high-pitched.

Tammy’s head lolled. “Mmf.”

“Hey, hang on, okay?”

Eidolghasts surged around them, pressing into the edges of Everly’s light. She loosed a second tendril, then a third, swatting and striking at the creatures. She was hyperaware of Tammy’s closeness, her body, her soul, pressed against Everly’s chest. Right there, like a snack for the Coruscare. Beads of sweat flushed her face and neck as she directed its wrath and hunger outward. She found it easier to do with the motions of her arms, but needed one to keep Tammy held up. It would have been even better if she could get two arms around Tammy, lift her properly so she could make her way back to the shroudpool and escape this nightmare. But the ghasts kept up their threat, and Tammy remained slumped against her, and Everly could barely take a step forward while splitting her focus on both.

“Tammy? Hey, can you teleport yourself out? Can you get back to Dark Corner?” Everly urged. If Tammy could go, Everly could put all her energy into fighting through to the portal, get back to their world, and hopefully get someone to Dark Corner in time to give Tammy the medical care she needed. “Try for me. Don’t you dare even argue, just try!”

“Mmf,” she said again, her mouth muffled against Everly’s shoulder. She moaned a low, long note that juddered out into a sob. Her words were a rough breath. “Can’t. Not working.” Her head flopped backward. The red skin and wings of her demon form seemed to grow dull and retract, as though her body was failing to hold the form. Everly had seen similar in Rylan, the night he almost died on the street in front of her house. He had looked like a vampire, but when his body had taken more damage than it could handle, he faded back to something more human. He was lucky that there was enough regeneration power left even in that form to help him hang on.

“Change!” Everly cried out. “Change into vampire form, so you can heal. Come on, Tammy, please!”

There had to be a vasmire out there in the storm of monsters.

Tammy’s head wobbled limply; her face turned up to the endless black sky.

Everly’s mind raced. Could she try to take Tammy’s soul into her, like she did with Rylan? Keep it safe until they could return her to her body? But what if her body didn’t survive? She could feel the urging of the Coruscare to let it do it, let it consume her, but with that urging came no reassurance that it would be saving her.
