CHAPTER 12
LUCY
âThereâs Calista.â I point her out to the OâRourke siblings.
âSo thatâs my competition,â Maeve jokes.
Rogan whistles. âIs she single?â
âNope. She got engaged to Ryder Goode on Christmas.â
âAre you sure?â
âYep. She called to tell me right afterward.â
âAll the good ones are taken,â he complains.
âYou need to shoot for someone in your age bracket.â I wave my arm to catch Calistaâs attention. She smiles when she sees me and hurries over. I hold my arms open, and she runs into them. âCongratulations!â We rock side to side while we hug.
When we finally part, she shows me her ring. âItâs beautiful, just like you,â I say.
âHoly crap. Thatâs some engagement ring,â Maeve says, reminding me Iâm not here alone.
âCalista, this is Niallâs sister Maeve and his brother Rogan.â
The three of them exchange greetings, and Rogan surprises her with a hug.
âBehave yourself,â I tell him.
He grins. âIâm just being friendly.â
I roll my eyes.
âWe better get to our seats,â Maeve says.
âBrrr, itâs cold in here.â Iâm glad I wore my boots and long wool coat.
âYouâll get warm once the game starts,â Calista says.
âDo they turn the heat on then?â I ask.
âNo.â She laughs.
âI think she means youâll warm up from watching all the hot hockey players,â Maeve explains.
âYep, thatâs it,â Calista agrees.
Rogan takes the lead, guiding us through the crowd and getting us to our seats only a few rows up from the ice. When weâre seated, Iâm between Calista and Maeve.
âAre you excited?â Maeve asks.
âI wouldnât say that. Curious is a better choice.â I canât tell her Iâm wondering why I came. The arena is freezing, and thereâs a weird smell in here. My ass is cold, and the seat is small and uncomfortable. But Iâm here with friends to watch my new friend.
Is Niall my friend?
He brought me cookies and stepped in when he noticed Les spying on us. That seems like the makings of a friendship.
I watch the players skating around and warming up. Their movements are powerful and smooth. I can see the skill thatâs necessary to be able to fly around the ice like they do.
Calista nudges my arm with hers. âI never thought Iâd see the day youâd be at a hockey game.â
âTell me about it. Iâve been sitting here questioning why I am.â
âItâs not all bad. We get to hang out,â she says.
âThat alone makes it worthwhile,â I say, smiling at her.
âPlus, youâve dragged me to more than one football game. It only seems fair you repay the favor,â she points out.
âThis is true.â
âThereâs Niall,â Maeve says, pointing at number seventy-five. Heâs a big guy off the ice, but with all his gear on, he looks intimidating as fuck, and itâs kind of hot.
Is it okay to think a friend is hot?
Calista presses her leg into mine to get my attention. âIâm going to tell you something thatâll make you laugh,â she says. âThereâs an entire section of women that call themselves The Goode Girls and wear clothing that says Goode Girl.â
âWait. You mean good with an E?â
She nods.
