6.3.1 Cost-benefit analysis

Cost-benefit analysis is a general method that is often used in engineering. What is typical of cost-benefit analysis is that all considerations that are relevant for the choice between different options are eventually expressed in one common unit, usually a monetary unit, like dollars or Euros. There are various types and variants of cost-benefit analysis (see, e.g., Mishan, 1975). If we consider the costs and benefits for society as a whole, this is usually referred to as a social cost-benefit analysis. Cost-benefit analysis can also be limited to the costs and benefits of a company that is developing a product and looking to market it.
