Chapter Sixteen

“No!” I yelled, focusing on the feeling of the rope between us. I pulled back on it, straining with all my might to gain myself some footing. It was like a tug of war was taking place in my chest and with one final tug, I managed to gain some of the rope back onto my side.

The action caught Victoria slightly off guard and I managed to back up a few steps until I stood in front of Quinn. From the corner of my eye, I could see smokey shadows starting to surround him, indicating he was about to let his powers fully loose.

“I’m not going with you, Victoria. I didn’t agree to this.” I concentrated on keeping myself in place, not allowing her to pull me forward anymore.

“You did agree to this Chloe. The second you learned that spell from me, your fate was sealed. You’ll have to kill me to break the bond.” She sneered down her nose at me, her expression cold and calculating.

At her words, Quinn darted forward, the thick shadows accompanying his movements. They whipped out towards Victoria, icy tendrils trying to grasp her wrists and subdue her. Unfortunately for Quinn, Victoria was faster and managed to dodge out of the way before he could catch her. Ignoring me for a moment, she began uttering a spell, summoning the same red ball of energy she had been trying to teach me to create.

With a grunt, Victoria threw the ball in Quinn’s direction. It missed, hitting a tree instead where it burst into a shower of sparks and charred into the bark. A few small fires sprung up around the tree’s roots as the sparks came into contact with fallen leaves and twigs.

Cursing, I dashed over to the tree to try and put out the flames. Sure, they were small now, but what we didn’t need was for them to get bigger. There was no better way to draw attention to yourself than to start a forest fire.

As I stamped on the flames, a jolt pulled me backward away from the tree. I landed hard on my back, staring up at Victoria’s grinning form. The white ball of light was illuminated in her palm again and she clenched her fist, taking away my breath. Helpless, I was dragged across the ground behind her as she began walking out of the clearing.

Another swirl of shadows appeared around me and Quinn was suddenly next to my side. For a brief moment, I felt the bond between Victoria and me drop, allowing me to sit up and talk.

“Quinn, what do I do? I can’t go with her.” I gulped in air between words in an attempt to calm myself down.

“I hate to say it Chloe, but I don’t think I can help. Not while she’s using dark magic and has such control over you. You’re going to need to break the bond.” His silver eyes were serious as he looked down at me. Behind him, the shadows ebbed and flowed in their protection of us.
