CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT:

Battle of the Sexes

THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WERE SPENT in a haze of Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, and phone calls to make plans for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. As Abby had said, Aunt Beth invited everyone to come to her house, including Trent’s entire family—Whitney and Wyatt, too.

The inside of the cabin had been transformed into our own little winter wonderland. The tree was decked out in lights, garland, tinsel, and dozens of glass ornaments. Trent had insisted on buying a personalized ornament with our names and the year inscribed on it, and then he declared we’d buy a new one every year. I’d teased him about how tacky it was, but secretly, I loved it.

There had been no more threats or dead bodies, which was both a blessing and a curse. I liked not having my house vandalized, but the sudden complete silence was terrifying. What were they doing? Colt, Sean, Jax, Whitney, and Wyatt still patrolled the woods near the cabin, but there had been nothing for weeks.

Sean was in constant communication with Macaih, who was giving him whatever information he learned, which wasn’t much. The rumor among the vampires was that Dante was truly dead. That offered some hope that the only thing we’d have to deal with was the Zoya.

“What’re you thinking about?” Trent asked.

I blinked. “Nothing,” I said with a smile and turned my attention to the Christmas tree. I loved the way it sparkled with so many lights that it lit up the entire living room.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

I sighed. “Guess I’m just a little overwhelmed with everything that’s still looming,” I said.

Trent sat next to me on the couch and wrapped his arm around me. I rested my head on his shoulder. “Try not to think about all of that right now. Christmas is only a couple weeks away, and we get to find out the genders of the babies today.”

I kissed his cheek. “And then we get to start decorating the nursery,” I said. I’d been waiting forever to do that.

Other than Jax, we still hadn’t told anyone that we were expecting twins. We’d invited everyone over later tonight so we could tell them the good news, and I was going to tell Isach I wanted him to bind my magic. I couldn’t wait to see everyone. As much as I loved spending the past couple of weeks with Trent, I missed my friends—especially Ellie.

We hadn’t had the chance to hang out when she came home for Thanksgiving, but now she was home for Christmas break, and I was determined to spend some time with her. She’d be coming tonight, too, and I was ecstatic to see her.

“We should probably get going,” Trent said, dropping a kiss on my forehead. “We don’t want to be late.” He stood and held his hand out to me.

I took his hand, and he pulled me to my feet. “I’m nervous,” I said.

“Why?” he asked, leading me outside to his truck.

I shrugged. “I don’t know.
