15. Dr. Samuel Shumway House

The stone Dr. Samuel Shumway House was built in the stately Federal style in the early 1800s. However, it is not solely that style but has some Greek Revival architectural influences; it is a unique home that is simply “Essex.”

Because Shumway House is situated at the corner of two streets it displays two dominant façades. The Church Street façade exhibits a classic Federal style entrance decorated by a flattened stonework arch along the top, a semi-elliptical louvered fanlight, and narrow sidelights along either side of the doorway.
