Hangeki (Defensive)

1. Step back with the right foot to adopt a left cat stance (neko ashi dachi) with a left middle-level guard (chudan kamae) (Figs. 18, 19).

2. As the opponent attacks, move the right foot to the rear right corner with a backward stamping step (hiki ashi) and block with a left knifehand outward block (shuto soto uke) (Fig. 20) executed in the following manner:

a) Inhale through the nose and retain the breath in the tanden.

b) Bring the left hand near to the right temple and then cut down at a forty-five-degree angle to deflect the attack, making contact with the outside part of the hand.

c) Exhale through the mouth, express zanshin, and prepare for the counterattack.

3. Step forward with a left stamping step (fumikomi ashi) and execute a right upper-level knifehand side roundhouse strike (jodan shuto yoko mawashi uchi) to the opponent's throat (Fig. 21).
