The number of containers required is a function of the container size, the number of occupants, and the period of storage. Once a container is filled, it needs to sit for the specified period of time noted in Chapter 2 (Figure 2.13) to achieve the desired state of maturation.

Cabinet design

• Sized to house one or two receptacles of choice, as seen in Figure 6.3.

• Vented with a fan rated between 5 and 20 cfm, with a noise rating < 20 dBa.

• Easy access to leachate drain (30 cm/12” clearance from cabinet side wall).

• Floor that spans the cabinet (that the pedestal sits atop of) is able to handle normal loads, preferably 1½” thick, comprised of two layers of ¾” plywood laminated together with a center support underneath.

• Cabinet interior is sealed with a durable waterproof coating (polyurethane, gel coat fiberglass, or epoxy).

• Doors are durable, non-warping, locking, and create a tight seal (with weather strip).

• Doors are also weatherproof and insulated if they are on the exterior of the building.

• Access needs to be on grade or have a ramp that allows easy removal of full containers
