Chapter Twenty-Four

Cassandra met us outside of the interrogation room. She was accompanied by a half-dozen Sons of Mars mercenaries. All of them were wielding M90s and wearing combat gear, looking ready for a fight. By contrast, Cassandra looked happy and relaxed.

It made me nervous.

“Did you find out everything you wanted to know?” Cassandra asked, putting her hands on her hips.

“You could say that,” I said, sticking my hands in my pockets.

“What was that about her not killing us?” Shannon asked, whispering over her shoulder.

“She’s not here to kill us.”

“How do you figure that?” Shannon continued whispering, glancing back at Cassandra and the many armed men behind her.

“Well, she wouldn’t be here where we could take her hostage,” I muttered, pointing out the obvious. “What do you think this is? A bad spy novel?”

“If I was a spy novel heroine, my name would be Angelica Hart,” Shannon said aloud, apparently accepting my reassurance at face value. Either that or she possessed a surprisingly off-beat sense of humor.

“Ohhh, nice one,” I said, putting on a false smile. I didn’t want any of the guards thinking I was ready to go for my gun. “My spy novel name is Magnus Colt.”

“Sounds more like a supernatural thriller protagonist… or a porn star.”

“Spoilsport.”

“Please, Ms. Cassidy, help!” Ye-jun shouted, waving his hands.

“Oh, Cassandra, can we have some zip ties?” I asked, pointing at Ye-jun. “A gag, too? We may need a lot of them for the members of your staff we’re taking with us.”

“Certainly,” Cassandra said. “But you’re incorrect.”

“You are going to kill us?” I asked, cocking my head to one side.

Cassandra took a deep breath, clearly annoyed. “No, Derek. Why on Earth would you even think that?”

“I was married to you.”

“Funny,” Cassandra said, narrowing her eyes.

“Not really.”

Shannon stared, dropping Ye-jun on the ground and putting her foot on his back. “So what is it we’re wrong about?”

“You’re not taking any of my staff anywhere. I’ve been on the phone for the past few hours with the Committee in hopes of sorting things out. I’ve been successful.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Shannon said, crossing her arms.

“Division One is going to be sending a large number of operatives over with assistance from Division Two. They’ll work in tandem with Pantheon Corp security to get to the bottom of this leak business,” Cassandra said, a smile on her face.

“You’ve got to be kidding,” Shannon said, a disgusted look on her face. “You’ve endangered the entire world.”

“No, the Emerald Eye has chosen to endanger the entire world,” Cassandra said, clasping her hands together. “Pantheon Corp is as much a victim in all this as anyone else.”

“That’s a… creative interpretation of events,” I said, feeling a headache coming on. I should have expected the Committee would make a deal with Cassandra, but I had expected a modicum of integrity from them. The fact I was also relieved made my feelings more than a little… mixed.

“What idiot chose to do that?” Shannon asked.

“My former father-in-law,” Cassandra replied, looking smug. I’d look the same way if I’d dodged a bullet like that.
