Chapter Twenty-Four
Cassandra met us outside of the interrogation room. She was accompanied by a half-dozen Sons of Mars mercenaries. All of them were wielding M90s and wearing combat gear, looking ready for a fight. By contrast, Cassandra looked happy and relaxed.
It made me nervous.
âDid you find out everything you wanted to know?â Cassandra asked, putting her hands on her hips.
âYou could say that,â I said, sticking my hands in my pockets.
âWhat was that about her not killing us?â Shannon asked, whispering over her shoulder.
âSheâs not here to kill us.â
âHow do you figure that?â Shannon continued whispering, glancing back at Cassandra and the many armed men behind her.
âWell, she wouldnât be here where we could take her hostage,â I muttered, pointing out the obvious. âWhat do you think this is? A bad spy novel?â
âIf I was a spy novel heroine, my name would be Angelica Hart,â Shannon said aloud, apparently accepting my reassurance at face value. Either that or she possessed a surprisingly off-beat sense of humor.
âOhhh, nice one,â I said, putting on a false smile. I didnât want any of the guards thinking I was ready to go for my gun. âMy spy novel name is Magnus Colt.â
âSounds more like a supernatural thriller protagonist⦠or a porn star.â
âSpoilsport.â
âPlease, Ms. Cassidy, help!â Ye-jun shouted, waving his hands.
âOh, Cassandra, can we have some zip ties?â I asked, pointing at Ye-jun. âA gag, too? We may need a lot of them for the members of your staff weâre taking with us.â
âCertainly,â Cassandra said. âBut youâre incorrect.â
âYou are going to kill us?â I asked, cocking my head to one side.
Cassandra took a deep breath, clearly annoyed. âNo, Derek. Why on Earth would you even think that?â
âI was married to you.â
âFunny,â Cassandra said, narrowing her eyes.
âNot really.â
Shannon stared, dropping Ye-jun on the ground and putting her foot on his back. âSo what is it weâre wrong about?â
âYouâre not taking any of my staff anywhere. Iâve been on the phone for the past few hours with the Committee in hopes of sorting things out. Iâve been successful.â
âYouâve got to be kidding me,â Shannon said, crossing her arms.
âDivision One is going to be sending a large number of operatives over with assistance from Division Two. Theyâll work in tandem with Pantheon Corp security to get to the bottom of this leak business,â Cassandra said, a smile on her face.
âYouâve got to be kidding,â Shannon said, a disgusted look on her face. âYouâve endangered the entire world.â
âNo, the Emerald Eye has chosen to endanger the entire world,â Cassandra said, clasping her hands together. âPantheon Corp is as much a victim in all this as anyone else.â
âThatâs a⦠creative interpretation of events,â I said, feeling a headache coming on. I should have expected the Committee would make a deal with Cassandra, but I had expected a modicum of integrity from them. The fact I was also relieved made my feelings more than a little⦠mixed.
âWhat idiot chose to do that?â Shannon asked.
âMy former father-in-law,â Cassandra replied, looking smug. Iâd look the same way if Iâd dodged a bullet like that.
