CHAPTER 5

CROSSROADS

Tom stays by my side as I move through the crowd. I won’t let him hold my hand, or link arms – I’m not his omega – though occasionally we bump into one another. There are fewer people here now than there were before, and I can’t find Nathan or Boyd. Randall and his friends are gone too. How late is it? I’d left my cell phone at home. I hadn’t planned on going anywhere.

I’m stranded at the party.

I feel like such a fool. Had I been gone that long? Why would they just leave me like that?

“What’s wrong?” Tom asks.

“My friends bailed. Can I use your cell phone?”

“Of course.”

Tom gives me his phone, but neither Boyd nor Nathan answer. I won’t call Ezra. He’d be furious, and it would only put me more under his thumb. No way will I do that to myself. The last thing I can do is call my parents, but I can’t deal with their anger either.

I’m not a child, though I’m too young to drink by Oregon law. I can’t imagine how much trouble I’d be in.

“I’m dead,” I say, “That’s it. My life’s over.”

“Hey,” Tom says, “Let me drive you home. I haven’t been drinking.”

I allow myself to look at him again. He carries his t-shirt in his hand, and he’s been walking about the party all bare chested and sexy as hell. It makes me angrier because every time I look at him, he rekindles the fire in me just by staring at his exposed flesh. It’s not fair at all.

“Fine,” I say.

He leads me to his car. It’s a Mustang, silver and sporty. I love Mustangs, and when I sit inside, I feel right at home. I won’t tell him that. A guitar case rests in the backseat, and I wonder how well he plays. I can still taste him on my lips, I can feel the ghost pressure of his kiss as though it still lingers.

He drives me back and neither of us say a word, except me to give him directions. He doesn’t act angry or anything, not acting like an alpha denied. But shit, it’s me who was rejected. How the fuck does an omega get rejected? The few times we make eye contact, I still see only concern.

I wonder how much of the night I’ll remember. I can’t be that drunk anymore, and I don’t want to forget him, and especially not his kiss. If anything, I want to pretend that we had gone further, secretly, and that I could take it with me forever, into my future hollow mating.

If life had taken me down another road, I could see myself with Tom more than I could with Ezra. This guy is perfect in every way, an alpha that cares about my reputation, about my feelings, and he doesn’t even know me. He respects my boundaries, even when I’d tried to give him permission. In a way, I’m relieved that he resisted. I can still live with myself, without guilt, knowing that I hadn’t done something stupid.
