Logan genuinely had no intention of going to the gig Freda had mentioned. He drove home after his trip to the Nook, passenger seat once again laden with more than heâd intended to buy, and settled in for an afternoon beside the wood burner. But his thoughts kept returning to his conversation with the shopkeeper, to the knowing look in her eyes as sheâd commented on how lonely island life could be, and he found himself remembering the pleasures of good music in small venues. His work had meant heâd often been backstage at huge concerts or attended intimate gigs with rock stars and household names but heâd always enjoyed the events with lesser-known musicians too. And, sometimes, theyâd been the best nights â packed rooms rich with camaraderie, tapping his foot to tunes that thudded through his whisky-warmed bones. He had never regretted taking a risk on a band or artist heâd never seen before and he was sure The Wreckers would be the same. There was no need to get tangled up in conversation with anyone â he could slip in at the back, enjoy the music and escape quickly afterwards. Eve certainly wouldnât be in a hurry to talk to him. He still winced as he recalled the polite but cool disdain with which sheâd regarded him the last time theyâd met. Nor could he blame her â heâd been an idiot, assuming she lacked the capability to fix the tap when she was clearly more skilled and resourceful than heâd known. Perhaps that was another reason to go to the gig â heâd be able to apologize for his ignorance. Or perhaps it might make things worse and he was better off avoiding further excruciating awkwardness. He couldnât decide.
The intangible disquiet was still there on Saturday afternoon, when Logan took a stroll along the beach. High tide had left brown-black seaweed and driftwood strewn across the pebble-dotted sand, glistening in the weak sunlight. The sky was grey and cheerless, the sea flat, and even the craggy majesty of the arch wasnât enough to dispel his restlessness. More than once, his gaze was drawn towards the bar at the end of the beach and as he got nearer, he took a seat on a small cluster of boulders to study it in more depth. The rooftop area was deserted, unsurprisingly on a cold and drab winterâs day, but the tall windows beneath glowed invitingly amid the gloom. There seemed to be a class taking place inside â Logan could see sleek figures bending and stretching. A yoga class, or maybe Pilates, he decided, and wondered whether teaching was yet another string to Eveâs bow. Heâd paid more attention to her appearance when sheâd come to Dune Cottage, mostly wondering how she could possibly have the strength required to wrestle indoor plumbing, and she definitely looked as though she kept herself in shape. But the room behind the windows looked like the kind of space that
