Chapter Seventeen

Tanner

That tugboat was a treasure trove. I mean it had everything. Food, a fishing pole and tackle, a canvas bag full of tools, but best of all, a five-gallon gas can. Now I could fill two of them and have enough, so I didn’t have to stop at noon.

We spent the night aboard, sleeping in bunks, and then hit the river the next morning. We turned west onto the Missouri just north of St Louis. I kept us centered in the new river and wondered how much further. A thousand miles?

The boat was loaded, between the four of us, and our supplies, it was low in the water. About halfway past the big city, the morning air was shattered with gunfire. Haley instinctively cringed as she bent over Britney, protecting her.

I swung away from the sound. It wasn’t a single shot, more like a firefight with a dozen guns firing, each reaching out to try and kill someone.

Gritting my teeth, I sent up a silent thank you that we didn’t have to work our way through that. Things were getting bad. Two weeks worth of food. That was what most cities had. Even out here in the mid-west, cities were going to be hurting.

Of course, just when you thought things couldn’t go bad, they did, the engine suddenly started coughing and sputtering. Haley’s eyes grew to the size of dinner plates as she looked at the engine, then the shoreline, then at me, silently begging me to fix things.

Cursing under my breath I feathered the engine trying to make it last long enough to get us to the beach. I didn’t want to drift down the river and end up in New Orleans.

The engine continued to sputter. I checked the gas can, more than enough, I swear it was like it just wasn’t getting enough fuel.

“Tanner?” Haley whispered.

I ignored her and focused on keeping things running long enough. Finally, I spotted a boat tied off to a dock. Using the last of the engine I got us in next to the dock and thew a line around a cleat.

Only when we were secure was I able to let out a long breath.

“What happened?” Haley asked.

All I could do was shrug then look around to make sure we weren’t going to be attacked immediately. Grabbing a blanket I threw it over our supplies to hide them from prying eyes. Haley saw it and immediately pulled a corner to hide the food.

“Stay there,” I said as I began taking the engine off the back and laying it on the dock. Suddenly a dozen shots rang out, just blocks away. My gut dropped as I scrambled to get the engine apart.

“What do you think it is?” Haley asked from the front of the boat. I ignored her as I pulled the fuel filter and blew through it hoping to clear it out.

Again shots rang out, closer this time. Like a running battle that was about to spill over us.
