H anna insisted on giving everyone some lemon-flavored water and apples while they were talking. She grabbed Bobby and fed him some left-over biscuits and gravy from the previous night’s meal before he had an apple. The boy’s face was screwed up into a big grin from the attention and the tasty food.

“Iffin’ you get away, what do you plan to do?” Bud looked back and forth between Jason and President Carr.

“We’re going to find a way to get the president reinstated. He’ll need to get the military on his side,” Jason said.

“They support the coup?” Harold asked, his voice reflecting some surprise.

“They have the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Hanson,” Carr said. “He wants to attack the Chinese.”

“Well, hell yes!” Harold said. “Why let them take our country apart?”

“Our issue now is to find a way to convince Hanson to support the president,” Jason said.
