So engrossed was Kahn in hurting the deputy, he didn’t notice Angel was there until the guy behind him made a surprised sound and pointed. He glanced over his shoulder, saw the man’s index finger aimed at Angel, and turned with a startled grunt, jerking back a step at the sight of the huge Magnum in Angel’s grip. He started to reach for something along his belt line, but she shook her head, saying, “Keep your hands up, you bastard.”

The rough growl in her words struck him like a slap, and he lifted both hands high as he backed away. Vickers and Savage had no choice but to step out into the open, their Colt M-16s raised to cover the folks standing out by the doors. The man sitting on the table had gone for his own weapon, too, but the sight of the machine guns froze him where he sat. The people at the far end of the repair bays turned slowly, realization dawning as they gasped and faced the threat, some reaching for guns.

“Stay right where you are!” Savage hollered, his booming voice resonating in the room through his air filtration mask and visor. The sight of the two massive officers and their formidable weapons froze everyone where they stood. One man glanced over his shoulder at the people out in the lot who hadn’t noticed the intrusion yet. “If anyone so much as reaches,” Savage snarled, “we’ll blow your damn heads off!”

Angel strode forward, keeping the barrel of her weapon leveled at Kahn’s chest, backing him off, finger itching to fire but needing to cut Davis free first. A glance to her right showed Jared scampering over, sliding his ammunition pack off his shoulder, and kneeling by the deputy in one smooth motion. A moment later, he had a knife out and was sawing at the bindings around Davis’s ankles. As he worked, Angel watched Kahn edge backward, hands dropping slowly toward his belt.

“I’d love for you to go for that weapon,” she growled. “I don’t need much of an excuse to blow you away.”

His stubby fingers squeezed into fists, shaking them at her, his face turning red with anger and from breathing the toxic air. None of them were wearing masks, but several had bandanas tied around their mouths and noses.

“You killed my wife,” Kahn hissed. “Cynthia is dead because of you.”

While Angel knew she’d shot someone that night, likely the man’s wife, she hadn’t been a hundred percent certain the woman had died. A chill shivered through her chest. Another death on her conscience, bringing her total to three. Still, none of what she’d had to do was her fault. She would’ve avoided it if she could’ve.

“No, she’s dead because of you.” She fired back. “You’re the one who came after us. It’s been you from the start. From the time we met at the hospital until now. You attacked me and then my poor grandparents. Now you’re here with these people, threatening a man’s life and… torturing him.
