“Do you know who you are, Naria,” Cranes asked as he sat in his chair opposite the couch where she was curled in a ball, hugging her knees. “Do you know, who you are?” She thought.

“Naria,” she said at last.

“Yes,” Cranes said, “that is your name, but do you know who you are?”

“Are they not the same,” she asked in earnest.

“No,” he said, sipping from his coffee cup, opening his notebook, clicking the pen to life and scratching across a page. “Your name is simply your name. Who you are is different. Who you are encompasses your desires, your likes and dislikes. Who you are is much more than your name.” She thought about this, as she thought about everything Dr. Cranes said to her.

“I’m... me,” she said at last and he put his pen in the notebook, closed the book and picked up a sheet of paper from the table beside him. He looked it over for a moment.

“I am yours, this is how I define myself, did you know that?” He read from the page. He placed it back on the table and looked at her. “Do you define yourself as a possession of someone else?” Again, she wondered if this was a trick.

“I am... me,” she said again, this time pointing at her chest. “I know that.”

“And, who is me,” Cranes asked, picking up the pen again. She had no response at first.

“A girl,” she said, “a girl with a heart and a mind and a soul. A girl with thoughts and wants and hopes and... love.” She whispered the last word.

“You love?” Cranes asked, “Who do you love, Naria?”
