Abram and Lot

Leaving Egypt was not a difficult decision. In fact, the decision did not rest in their hands. Had it been possible, Abram surely would have voted to stay longer to continue padding their purses. The favors and riches they had accumulated had almost clouded their judgements. That’s when God stepped in, and the pharaoh took that choice away from them.

The pharaoh instructed his soldiers to give Abram and Lot enough time to pack their things and leave.

The captain of the guards, a military man with efficiency and other demands on his mind, deemed that time to be less than an afternoon to gather their belongings.

With their things bundled and thrown together somewhat haphazardly, they trudged out of Cairo and through the sands of Egypt.

When they crossed the border, everyone breathed a sigh of relief about having said goodbye to the glint of steel at their back from the pharaoh’s guard. In Negev, the road-weary caravan pitched their tents for a week to much fanfare from the rest of their traveling party.

Going down to Egypt had proved much easier than leaving. The three of them traveled minimally, with enough to sustain themselves until a day or two later.

With their success in Egypt, the two men now counted sheep, camels, and other livestock as a large part of their wealth. They had also acquired slaves, tents, gold, spices, and beautiful silk fabrics through their business dealings.

It took a few days into their journey for Sarai to realize Abram treated their slaves almost as well as the pharaoh had treated her in the palace. Better, in her mind, as she thought a healthy daily dose of work actually helped men and women lead richer lives. It definitely made the wine and food taste better at night. They employed slaves for cooking, cleaning, herding, and other specialized needs a successful business owner required when his beautiful young bride had taken up residence with a pharaoh for several months. And when she returned, Abram made sure she had a few of her own to attend to desires he could not always be present to relieve.

The camp overflowed with beautiful women – short, tall, round, and slim, each to indulge various desires a man finds himself needing to satisfy.

Abram knew his wife well and rounded out her retinue with a little more heft, opting for those with thighs that stood like oaks, arms solid as stone, and chests that bulged much like the hammocks securing the packages they carried between their legs.

And Sarai thanked him each evening as she buried her head into his shoulder and fell fast asleep.

So, when they arrived in Negev with their spears, swords, and shields removed from their backsides, along with the scowling and cursing of the Egyptian Royal Guard burning black dots against the setting sun, the entire traveling party relaxed and rejoiced.

Abram ordered an enormous feast to celebrate their accomplishments in the neighboring country.

While the men outside the tents killed and cleaned the animals, the women prepared the other dishes of bread and fruit.
