“Erik!” Long Sight’s whispered words and his hand woke me.

I slipped out of the lodge and stood. I waited until we were close to the trees before we spoke. “The birds and animals still make their noise and there is no sign of Black Otter.” I nodded and he slipped off to his own lodge. I donned my bearskin. It was for warmth. The storm had taken away the clouds and it had made for a cold night. Until I had stepped out of the lodge I had not realised. As my eyes adjusted to the dark, I saw the other sentries. They were still as was I. It was movement that alerted an enemy. Black Otter might come when they broke camp but the Penobscot could have sent scouts out without him knowing.

The sun rose quickly and filled the camp with light. All the warriors, who woke with the sun, emerged and looked at the sentries. By the time Wandering Moos had risen, I had donned my byrnie and relit the fire. It was a couple of hours later that Black Otter and the sentries all ran in.

“The Penobscot have broken camp. They are not far behind us!”
