Chapter 17

Bark bit into the pads of my paws as I leapt from branch to branch. In panther form, I could fly through the trees almost as fast as I could run on the paths with two legs. The wind ruffled the fur on my face as I bunched my back legs to…

An insistent beeping sound invaded my dream. I rolled over into my warm covers, trying to recapture my escaping dream.

My phone continued to beep. It hit me that it was the ringtone for Aunt Allison. Oh, no! An emergency. Snapping awake, I saw it was two a.m. I answered the phone. “Mmm.”

Aunt Allison’s voice, sounding as tired as I felt, was clipped, each word short and precise. It woke me further, like cold water splashing in my face. “Five minutes, front door. Emergency pick up. Call Bev.”

“Mmm.” Hanging up, I rolled out of bed. I put the phone on speaker and found Bevin’s number on my favorites list. As the dial tone purred, I grabbed jeans and a shirt to wear off the floor. They smelled mostly clean.

The call went to voicemail. I tried again. While I waited for him to answer, I found a pair of clean socks and pulled them on.

“Eh?”

“Mornin’, Bev. I’m getting picked up by Aunt Allison in—” I checked the clock, “—oh, hell, two minutes. We’ll swing by your place next. Love ya!”

I hung up, found a coat and my wallet, and ran to the kitchen to write a quick note to my family. Aunt Allison called at 2am for emergency. ~Jade.

Rummaging in the fridge, I grabbed three sodas and some energy bars, threw them in a bag, and headed for the door. When I got outside, my aunt was waiting. I jumped in and handed her a soda. She looked as tired as I felt and smiled gratefully for the caffeine.

“Did you reach Bev?”

Grunting an affirmative, I took a drink. She navigated the dark streets to his house. We found him waiting for us on the stoop, similarly attired in jeans, shirt, coat, and holding a bag of goodies from the kitchen. He jumped in the back seat.

He checked out what I had and snorted. “Great minds think alike…and so do ours.”

I laughed.

Aunt Allison drove about ten minutes before I had enough caffeine in me to form a complete sentence. “Okay, details on this pickup? It’s been a while since we’ve had a pickup this early.”

In the back, Bevin grunted as I heard him handling his can of soda. “Gods, it’s early.”

She shook her head as if to clear it of cobwebs. “Oh, sorry! I’m half-asleep myself. Zack, a lone wolf who lives in Sun Prairie, was doing a midnight hike near Devil’s Lake and tumbled off a rock face. He thinks he may have broken his leg. It’s healing wrong. All in all, he needs medical help and I’m just the driver this time. It’s your first solo…or duo run.”

I let my head fall back on the headrest and sighed. “So, he took a midnight hike, probably without any light source.
