Chapter 11

It had a long, thin body with two stubby legs. Each foot was tipped with hook-like claws that dug into Becca's forearm as the creature hissed at her. It didn't have a mouth so much as a hole where its mouth should have been, full of razor-sharp teeth that seemed to pulse back and forth as the creature breathed. As the teeth whirled in its mouth, the animal made a sound exactly like a buzzsaw.

Becca barely had a chance to react before the thing lashed out and bit her arm. She screamed in pain and thrashed, the monster's sinewy body flailing about like a flag of hard grey flesh. Try as she might, it didn't let go.

Then, those teeth started digging.

"Get OFF!" Becca screamed and blasted the creature with her fire. Try as she might, her flames had no effect on it. It was as fireproof as a dragon!

From the side, she heard Windcutter screaming in pain, his voice soon joined by Loresight. Whatever this thing was, it wasn't alone! Becca concentrated on her magic. She had to get this thing off before it chewed through her arm! Even as she redoubled her efforts to throw it off, it wrapped itself around her arm and dug in with its claws, drawing spurts of blood. Those oscillating teeth picked up speed, and Becca was suddenly blinded by pain. Her concentration wavered for a moment, but that was all it took for her magic to slip through her fingers.

Becca let her instincts take over. If thrashing and fire couldn't work, then a dragon was left with other weapons. She bit down on the creature, and her teeth cut through its armored hide. A spurt of dark red blood gushed into her mouth, accompanied by the taste of the monster's foul flesh. It tasted disgusting and nearly made her throw up, but she didn't stop until the creature was bit clean through.

The creature's teeth loosened their grip on Becca's arm as its lower half fell off before finally it too came loose. Becca hissed in pain and quickly examined the wound. Three circular cuts dug painfully into her arm, forming the vague shape of a dartboard. Blood welled up and poured down her black scales. She quickly licked it clean and spat a fireball to cauterize it before turning to check on her friends.

Windcutter wrestled with three of the monsters, but a small pile of dead bodies lay at his feet. Though his feathers were stained red with blood in a few places, he seemed fine. Loresight, on the other hand, was anything but. It appeared that most of the rubble that had fallen on him was actually more of the disguised monsters! Over a dozen of the things were crawling over his copper hide, looking for a place to sink their teeth in.

Loresight's screams were haunting and agonized. Becca once again reached for her magic and shaped her soul into a weapon. Normally when she used magic, it manifested as fire. Fire, however, was just one of many shapes plasma could take.
