As the days passed, it became easier to forget the treacherous time when Mercy almost lost her soul to the devil. Iâve never been so frightened in my life. Not even when Marissa hurt her like Mercy had somehow wronged the evil miscreant of her past. At least Marissa was real. Mortal. A figure that could be taken away in handcuffs and made to never see the light again.
What happened in Mercyâs bedroom⦠that thing to grace her presence⦠was not meant for human eyes to perceive. It was the kind of thing the pastors of Mercyâs youth warned their congregations against every fearful Sunday. Sermons Mercy should have paid more attention to, whether she believed in them or not.
But as days and nights flew by, she in turn slowly forgot. Mercy returned to work, where she had deadlines to make and coworkers to avoid outside of the board room. Inside, they were forced to keep their mouths shut while she spoke. A few commented on her newfound confidence, now that they understood where it came from. Rashid was the only one to offer positive reinforcement when he took Mercy aside and noted that she looked much more well rested and âwith itâ in recent weeks. He left it at that, thankfully. Not like Bill, who sauntered up to her one Thursday afternoon and remarked that she was âmore beautiful by the day.â
Mercy knew that she needed to stand up to him. Furthermore, she should report him to HR for his constant harassment. Yet she hesitated, for no other reason than she simply didnât feel like it. Life was easier if she merely ignored Bill or interacted with him as little as possible. It was easier when their bosses were around. At a particular board meeting, he even complimented her without coming off as a creep who only wanted to sleep with her. Didnât stop him and someone else from talking about how much they loved lesbian porn later that day, but Mercy took it as a small, genial win.
There were a few other wins that week. Friday afternoon, when Mercy was about to grab her lunch from the staff fridge and eat it in the corner of her office, where she often scrolled through her phone in peace and quiet, a knock came to her door.
It wasnât unusual for one of the other managers to ask her out to a business lunch. They were rarely mandatory, so Mercy politely declined every time. Back when she was with Marissa, it was easier to come up with excuses. âSorry. Have to call my girlfriend.â Sometimes she got an eyeroll. Other times she could see the possibilities lighting up behind their pupils. Mercy always ignored them and pretended to get on her phone. Often, she really did have to call Marissa to check in with her. When she got paranoia, she was liable to call Mercy in the middle of a board meeting to ensure there was no at-work hanky panky going on.
