8.8 CONCLUSION

An anaerobic treatment system with immobilized cells is a promising alternative for pharmaceutical industrial wastewater treatment, and it could be cost effective since the cells can be used several times without significant loss of activity. Anaerobic digestion of pharmaceutical effluent was investigated using immobilized mixed cultures. Immobilized cells have been a successful approach in batch mesophilic anaerobic digestion of pharmaceutical wastewater in an effluent concertation of 6500 mg/L. When the process operated at 38°C utilizing a 76 hour hydraulic retention time, constant COD removal efficiencies of 70% to 80% was achieved. The performance of immobilized cells was stable after storing at 4°C for 25 days and could be reused up to 10 cycles though significant loss of COD removal efficiency was recorded after 8 cycles. The rate of COD reduction of immobilized cell is also maintained up to the fourth cycle. Anaerobic digestion with immobilized cells is a proven technique and at present applied to a variety of wastewater treatment process.
