In a poem called Three Movements’, published in 1932, W. B. Yeats identified the expanding horizons of the Shakespearean moment, the self-expression of the Romantic revolution, and the trauma of his own time as the great turning points in cultural and literary history. Renaissance, Romanticism, Modernism: these are the three movements that have been most studied and most often regarded as the high watermarks of the tide of English Literature. At each historical moment, clusters of writers, who often knew each other, pushed the boundaries of almost every genre of English Literature: Sidney, Spenser, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, Donne, Herbert, Middleton, Marston, Webster, then Milton and Marvell, during the Renaissance of the late 16th and 17th centuries; Blake, William and Dorothy Wordsworth, Coleridge, Charlotte Smith, Scott, Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley, Keats, and Clare during the Romantic revolution of the late 18th and early 19th centuries; Eliot, Pound, Yeats, Joyce, Ford Madox Ford, Dorothy Richardson, Wyndham Lewis, Woolf, D. H. and T. E. Lawrence, Waugh, Aldous Huxley, and many more during the years from about 1910 to the outbreak of the Second World War. The labels Renaissance, Romantic, and Modernist were, however, attached after the event, not by the innovators themselves.
