SECURE COMMUNICATION

In the past, many embedded systems operated in an air-gapped environment, not connected to any wired or wireless network. Although this practice is still present in some industries, it’s slowly vanishing for the simple reason that none of the modern ideas like predictive maintenance, data-driven optimization, and remote access work without proper communication channels.

Even the first cryptographic methods in the days of Caesar aimed to protect communication, and 2,000 years later, the internet is inconceivable without secure communication. However, a significant number of devices still don’t use secure protocols for data exchange with their administrators and other entities in their environment.

In this chapter, we’ll first look at the set of requirements that’s imposed on robust communication channels, followed by an introduction to the most common protocol to tackle these challenges and a corresponding practical case study. Afterward, we’ll look at two areas where the standard solution doesn’t help: non-IP communication and the need for redundancy.
