FIFTEEN

IVAN POPOV FOUND O’MALLEY, and they were now together in Chuck Haggard’s office at the NYPD Human Trafficking Unit.

“Tell us everything you know so far,” said Haggard to Popov.

Popov reiterated the background he had already relayed to Haggard for O’Malley’s benefit. “We traced their communications as far back as possible. The earliest we could find was about two years ago. ‘Andrei Chikatilo’ contacted Upshaw, who was using a pseudonym on the dark web that was not very creative, so we easily figured out who he was and what organization he was with. ‘Chikatilo’ was looking for a like-minded person who could help with a problem. They used oblique references at the time, but now appear in retrospect to be describing the sinking of the ships in the New York/New Jersey port.”

Haggard and O’Malley both sat forward in their seats.

“It also appears that they had a face-to-face meeting somewhere in the US about eighteen months ago.”

Haggard asked, “Who else knows about this?”

“Just us three for now.”

Haggard instantly knew that this could be a huge break in the case to find those responsible for killing his wife—and all those other passengers on the cruise ship the day of the massive explosion. He and his kids were still grappling with the grief and enormous feeling of loss. His kids were struggling in school and getting into more conflicts there and at home. He knew their “acting out” was a sign of depression that he felt helpless to fix. He missed Theresa desperately. The huge hole in his heart pained him so much that he had trouble focusing on many tasks. That difficulty just disappeared with Popov’s information. His mind snapped to focus like a laser to catch this man. “Where is Upshaw now?”

Popov replied, “Not surprisingly, he has gone dark since O’Malley here killed a couple of his guys.”

A plan formed in Haggard’s head. He punched a button on his desk phone. “Rufus, get in here, please.”

Thirty seconds later, Rufus Johnson came in. “Yessir?”

Haggard briefed him. When he was done, he said, “So we have two people we need to find. We know the name of one—Jack Upshaw. The other uses the pseudonym of Andrei Chikatilo, thought to be in Russia. We need to find them both as quickly as possible. I want five of your best people detailed to each one of them. Find them now.”

“On it.” Johnson turned and left.
