Chapter Fourteen

Solomon looked out over the small crowd assembled before them. He did not move, nor did he speak. He stood and stared, his expression unreadable.

Gilly mentally ticked off the moments, the tension in the room increasing with each silent second. It was as if the room was filling with water. Gilly saw herself floating at the top, craning her head against the ceiling to get one last gasp of air before going under.

“Mace,” she said, her tone sounding wild and panicked. She took a breath, then said his name again in a more moderate tone. “Have you organized a plan for what happens next?”

The wizard looked from face to face in the crowd, then turned back to Gilly, a sheepish expression on his face. “We hope to take the guards by surprise and overwhelm Sayeed while he’s incapacitated. Once Solomon has bested him, he can banish him from the estate for good.”

Solomon let out a harsh bark of laughter. “Sounds like a perfect plan. Except you haven’t told me how you plan to deal with the jinn. Or how you plan to keep my brother from just coming back here with a bigger contingent of men and wiping us out.”

Gilly forced a smile on her face, silently growling at Solomon for his defeatist attitude. “That jinn is a head-scratcher,” she admitted, patting Mace on the shoulder. “But you seem like a very clever wizard. There must be a method that has crossed your superior mind.”

Mace cocked a bushy white eyebrow at her, then gave a shrug. “We’d hoped to turn him to our side. The jinn doesn’t serve Sayeed willingly. He was compelled by an oath he swore, but the oath was a result of trickery. No one is sure how Sayeed managed it, but I expect he’d be willing to lend a hand to whoever could free him from his compulsion.”

“See?” Gilly said, her pitch rising as she motioned to Solomon. “We’ve just got to convince him to join our side.” She turned back to the wizard. “And how is it going, bringing him over to mutiny?”

Mace looked down at the floor. “No one has yet had the courage to approach the jinn. He is powerful, and if it goes wrong, he’ll alert Sayeed to our plot.”

Disappointment pricked her, but she pushed it away, pretending to be unfazed. “Well, it sounds like I have a mission then. I’ll convince the jinn to join the resistance myself. In fact, I’m just the Fae for the job.”

“Not a chance in hells,” Solomon said, attempting to shut down her plan before it was fully formed.

“Come on, Solomon,” she said in a friendly tone, punctuating it by lightly punching his arm. “I’ve got the skillset required, thanks to my abilities. I just need to find...” Her eyes scanned the room, looking for an appropriate opening. They landed on the demon females, and her mind started to turn.

“It’s too dangerous,” Solomon insisted. “Yesterday, you didn’t even know what a jinn is, and now
