Chapter Eighteen

Cole

Cole had been up since before the sun rose, but it had nothing to do with the open water. Between worrying about Maggie and worrying about Lilah, he should’ve known better than to think he’d sleep. He couldn’t decide which woman had him more up in arms.

His mother and her grumpy drunkenness?

Or the way Lilah left his apartment, fighting tears she didn’t think he saw.

Maggie had him confused, but she seemed fine enough when she left for work that morning. The whole Lilah thing was strange, but he knew what was going through her head.

He didn’t do girlfriends and she didn’t do casual.

The night before, her body revealed all he needed to know about the way she felt. There was no question she was attracted to him. What had Cole nervous was the way she broke off the kiss, then left in a huff. He could only assume it meant she was emotionally involved.

That makes two of us, then.

Maybe Lilah hadn’t noticed he hadn’t been with a woman since he rescued her from that jerk at the diner.

Maybe she hadn’t noticed he’d tried to kiss her twice, and even though she shot him down, he kept coming back.

Maybe she didn’t realize he wasn’t the kind of guy who chased after women.

He was the kind of guy that women chased after.

And still, there he was, about to chase after her one more time. He couldn’t let what happened the night before mess things up between them. Not when he’d finally discovered she was developing feelings for him in the same way he was developing feelings for her. Not that he was ready to acknowledge those feelings, but he wasn’t ready to let Lilah Moore walk out of his life yet, either.

After waiting longer than he wanted to, he finally heard Lilah’s front door slam. She didn’t go anywhere in the mornings except the pool and Cole had been sitting around in his swimsuit for the better part of the last hour. With a smile, he grabbed his towel and his shades, then headed for the door. As he stepped out of his apartment, the air pressed down on him. A light breeze smoothed across his skin and rustled the fronds of a nearby palm tree, but even that wasn’t enough to make the day feel comfortable. As much as he regretted not being on the water for financial reasons, he sure wasn’t going to complain about being able to get out of the heat later that afternoon.

The walk to the pool wasn’t long, but it was long enough for sweat to break out on his forehead. The water sparkled under the morning sun and beckoned for Cole to jump in and cool off. Maybe swim a few laps and let the physical exertion work off some of the stress that had settled into his chest overnight. But, as he pushed open the gate, he saw Lilah stretched out in one of the lounge chairs in her hot pink bikini. Sunglasses covered her eyes and her arms stretched over her head, her tan legs begging to be touched.
