Chapter 21

Denver, Colorado

Day 21

The sun seemed somehow brighter than it had been even a day ago as Jake squinted through the window, looking out over the sprawling meadow to the rear of Meredith’s large property. A thatch of trees to the right blocked his view, though the shrinking leaves and wilting branches had started to reveal some scattered gaps. Jake wondered how long it would be before every single tree he saw was little more than a brown-barked skeleton, the trees withering beneath the punishing glare of a white-hot sun, unprotected by ozone.

“I’m not sure it’s the best idea— going out during the day I mean.” Meredith emerged behind him, lowering herself slightly so she could peer over his shoulder, out across the grass.

“I need to get eyes on that back door— to figure out if it’s a passable exit. Franklin’s got his goons patrolling all night, I have to take advantage of the sun.”

“How do you propose to do that? Remember — Franklin and those same goons stole our hazmat suits— the MOPP gear that Morris and his men donated to our cause.”

“That thought did occur to me.” Jake stepped from the window and began walking toward the stairs leading up to the second level. “I’m sure Barry’s got something I could cobble together.”

Both Ace and Meredith followed him to the stairs, and then up those same stairs, making his way to the second level where the master bedroom was perched at the landing, overlooking the sprawling expanse of the living room.

“What are you looking for?”

“You said Barry was a skier, right? He used to go to Aspen with his parents?”

“Yeah, sure— but that was a long time ago.”

Jake was already pushing through the door and making his way around the bed, toward the large, walk-in closet. Before Meredith could reach him, Jake was already leafing through the clothes, scraping hangers along the bars, digging through layers of stacked clothes, looking for something. After only a few minutes of searching, Jake dug through an opened mini dresser door and plucked out a pair of wind pants, holding them up so he could get a good look at them. He tossed them onto the bed, then continued searching.

“If you’re looking for winter gear, it would be downstairs. We have a mudroom between the garage and the main house that—”

“That’s next on my list.” Jake swept more clothes aside until he found a hooded sweatshirt, bright red in color with a strange emblem on the chest that he looked at through narrowed eyes before shrugging and tossing it onto the bed alongside the wind pants. Turning within the closet, he peered out at the bed, then strode forward, forcing Meredith to take a step back, out of his path.

Meredith watched as Jake strode from the closet and walked over to the bed, standing and looking at the piled clothes. Without hesitation, he grasped the bottom of the shirt he was wearing and yanked it up over his head, sweeping it from his body and tossing it aside.
