ON SEKKIZ
BOTH OF US flinch when we hear that deep, booming voice.
Chen.
Chen is here.
I turn, finding the snarling beast. Its eyes glow red and its fangs glint in the faint light. Its claws grow sharper and longer each second while drool drips down the side of its mouth.
"Dad-"
"Don't you dare 'dad' me. I don't need to hear your silly excuses. My own son befriends a Uyghur, a Bèndà n. What am I going to tell the government when they find out?"
âPle-â
âWhat did I just say? Donât give me any excuses. You had one job. One and you failed. You failed as a son.â
Chen snatches Liang's wrist and swipes him off his feet, sending the boy flying towards him. I lunge at his other arm and pull him in the other direction, his hand slipping off Liang.
"Wha-"
"Back off."
"What did you say?"
"I said back off. Get your hands off him."
"He's my son, MóguÇ. I can do whatever I want with him."
"Kai, please don't," Liang pleads under his breath, his eyes brimming with tears.
Chen reaches out and smashes Liang into the wall, a river of blood trickling down his face. Chen pants like a starved, bloodthirsty lion.
âYou are no better than them. How dare you go directly against the orders of your own father? How dare you?â
I pounce on Chen from behind. He flinches and the fire in his eyes turns into surprise, only to ignite again. He snarls and bites like a rabid animal.
"Stop it. Leave your poor son alone. He doesn't need to deal with the devil."
Chen throws me off, scrambling to Liang. He lifts the boy by his neck, his iron hands squeezing. Liang twitches and claws at his father's hands and his eyes bulge out before he goes limp. Chen jerks him and slams him into a chair, splintering it into a million pieces.
As Chen's feet come to life, I pounce on him again.
"Do you realize what kind of a father you are? Do you? You're a despicable, corrupt father to a kind-hearted son. Your son didnât fail, you did."
Chen freezes into an ice statue as the poison spraying from my mouth empties. I let go of his crumpled shirt as he melts onto the floor. I watch as his tongue twists and turns, only slurred sounds coming out of them.
A dark figure catches my attention.
Liang.
I rush to him. "Liang. Liang. You're father's okay now. He isn't a monster, at least, not right now. You can wake up. Liang? Liang? Wake up. Liang."
I turn him around until I gaze into his hollow, frozen eyes.
"NoNoNoNoNoNo."
I cup my ear over his chest, trying to hear one beat.
Just one.
But all that's left is a
Sad,
Lonely,
Dead heart.
Iâve lost so much in the past few weeks.
Mama,
Papa,
Hala,
Yu,
Taio,
And now Liang.
RRRRRRRR.
The fire takes over.
I raid the cabinet until I pull out some jars.
"What have you done?"
Smash.
The glass explodes on the ground, scattering like stars in the night sky.
"You killed your own son."
Smash.
"How could you do that?"
Smash.
"How could you kill your child?"
Smash.
"You killed your own blood with your own bare hands.
