“I’m glad that you were wrong for a change,” Freya said as they stepped back onto the road.

“I think I can agree with that sentiment,” Nate replied.

It was currently late in the afternoon, perhaps around half-past-four, and if they hurried, Nate knew they could make it to a city before dark. The day had been tense as they’d traveled and although they’d run into some monsters, the most dangerous creature they’d faced had been an 8th rank spewer fox that they’d managed to take down more easily than the badger.

The monster was quite valuable, especially seeing as it had a spell that could melt organic material. The spell was called Acrid Bomb and was cast by the fox breathing out clouds of dense gas that burned at its surroundings.

If it wasn’t dispersed quickly enough, it would explode, doing far more damage. Thankfully, they’d killed it before it could even get its first spell off. After that, it was smooth sailing. They’d collected some nice materials as well; plants, mushrooms, and a few small bits of iron and copper ore.

In Warine, iron would be harder to find than copper and the other ingredients for steel would be harder still. The vast majority of weapons made by smiths would be forged of copper or bronze. There would be the rare iron weapons, though steel would be almost unheard of. But, if he did manage to find some iron, limestone, and coal, he’d be able to bring it to a smelter.

It would cost a few points, but once he had steel, he could sell a single ingot for around 50,000 points here in Warine. In later planets, where the materials were more common, the price would go way down. It was tempting to hold onto the iron ore, even if there was just the chance they could find the ingredients to make steel, but, if the iron would give him the needed points to upgrade his manual, he would sell it without a second thought.

“Which way are we going?” Freya asked, looking left and right, trying to spot a city.

“That way,” Nate said, pointing right. “If I’ve calculated it correctly, we should reach Westfort Nine in about two hours. We can start our search there.”

He knew Noam wouldn’t be there, but it would be suspicious if he found him right away. There was another city between Westfort Nine and Westgate Six, but he would make sure to put on a show of searching that one as well.

“What are we waiting for?” Freya said, pulling her scooter from her ring. “There’s real food waiting for us. Come on!”

She rushed off, forcing Nate to hurry to keep up. There were many people on the road, which slowed them a bit, but, just as he’d predicted, the city came into view within the timeframe he’d given. They paused at the city gates though, watching as a team of fighters made their way back, carrying a large, shaggy, yellow dog between them.

“Did they kill a dog?” Freya exclaimed.
