Several months after Kevin died, Charles and Pam were together in Kevin’s room, sorting through books and photos, hats and boots and roping gear.

Pam sat on Kevin’s blue-striped bedspread, holding his pillow to her face. “It still smells like him,” she said.

Charles stood near the bedroom doorway. “I knew Kevin was going to die.”

Pam nodded. Charles had eventually told her that when he saw Kevin in Winnsboro shortly after the accident, a doctor told him the injuries were so severe that recovery was all but impossible. Charles had known from that moment that there was very little hope. From the day of the accident, he’d understood what Pam had been unable to grasp until God gave her a supernatural peace, six days later.

Now Charles looked at Pam, still holding Kevin’s pillow. He said, “But even though I knew he was going to die, I also knew everything was going to be okay.”

“How did you know?” she asked.

“The whole time we were there, I kept hearing Kevin’s voice. He kept saying ‘Let go, Dad, just let me go.’”

Pam stared at Charles. With awe in her voice, she said, “He kept telling me the same thing.”

Charles said through tears, “He knew. He knew he couldn’t be saved. His spirit was there and wanted to leave, but he couldn’t. Not until he knew we would be okay.”

Following Kevin’s death, Pam went on to create a ministry home for troubled girls. More than a thousand girls have come through the ministry, which Pam calls Holy Highway. Some stay for a year, others for just a few months. They attend school, get counseling, and find a fresh start away from the drugs or other influences that have wreaked havoc in their lives. Pam says that helping other parents and kids who, for whatever reason, can’t be together for a while has helped her find a measure of healing.

Pam keeps Kevin’s picture on her desk in her office at Holy Highway. Kevin would be a man by now with children of his own, but there are never any new photos to update the old. To Pam, her son is still eighteen and always will be, and the girls often ask about the handsome dark-haired boy with the beautiful green eyes.
