A block of stone had my upper arm in a viselike grip. It was giving me a small shake as well.

“Harper. Harper, it’s time to get up.”

I groaned. “Go away.”

“Come on, Rosebud. We need to leave.”

I grunted but didn’t make any move to get up.

“I brought you a sandwich.”

That had me moving. Food hadn’t passed my lips in far too long. How I’d slept in a starving state–I noticed my hunger now that I’d woken, and food had been mentioned–I had no idea.

“Where?”

“In the car.” Ugh.

Light came in from outside my door. Blake had kept my bedroom light off. How kind of him. How’d I get here? We’d left the living room, but I didn’t remember anything after that. I must have fallen asleep in Blake’s arms.

“Thank you for bringing me to bed,” I said as I allowed him to help me sit upright.

“Um, you’re welcome.” He sounded weird, but I let it pass–still too tired to want to delve into the gargoyle’s shyness.

“Do I have time to clean up and use the bathroom?” If I remembered right, we were heading to his parents’ house. That was not something I wanted to dwell on, or I’d have a panic attack of sorts and Blake would have to remove me with force from the house.

“Be fast. Jordon wants to leave in fifteen minutes.”

The bag of new clothes sat on a table by the door. I rushed to it, trying not to fall over in my haste while still waking up.

“See you in ten,” I called, closing myself into the bathroom.

I took the fastest shower of my life in the most exquisite shower I’d ever been in. If I tied myself to Blake, I’d have these nice conveniences at my disposal every day. Was tying myself to Blake under these conditions, and also so I wouldn’t have to go to the tiny house Craig and I had moved into, fair to the gargoyle?

Blake waited in my room when I came out of the bathroom. When he noticed me, the gargoyle stood erect from where he leaned against the doorframe.

“Ready?”

I nodded, running a hand through my wet hair as I looked around the room to verify I had everything. “Yeah, I think so.”

“If you forget anything, we will be back.”

At least I’d be back to pick up any forgotten items before moving back in with Craig. While I’d begun to like Blake as a person, I was still so far from love. Yes, I’d like to work with him more in his garage–I’d had a blast–but as I followed him from the room, I decided there was no use worrying about it right then. We had bigger things happening now. Like escaping Blake’s castle of a mansion.

Jordon met us in the entry hall. He looked at Blake, ignoring me, but he was also all business, so I wasn’t offended. “I’ll take her from here. Go release the Danvilles. We’ll meet you just outside the front gate.”

Blake nodded and pushed me forward to go with his cousin.
