Dusk was settling over the Delta by the time we got back to Zinnia. Coleman had called the authorities along the Mississippi River to keep an eye out for the group and where they might move to. He’d been out of his jurisdiction when we’d accosted the boaters, with no evidence or authority to arrest anyone. But he clued the local authorities in on the situation. They’d promised to investigate and keep him informed.

“They’ll be gone,” I said.

“Probably. But I assure you, they won’t disappear.”

We walked into Dahlia House with our feet dragging. We were tired and discouraged. “What’s next?” I asked.

“Call Tammy and see how Altha is doing?” He put a hand on my back. “It’s best to leave her with Tammy. She has all of little Dahlia’s things. She’s equipped to take care of her. And whipsawing the child from place to place can’t be good.”

He made excellent points. I wanted Altha with me, but I had to choose what was best for her. I made the call and Tammy readily agreed, though something in her tone nagged at me. When I turned to face Coleman, he pulled me into his arms.

“We found her mother.” I still couldn’t believe what had happened. “I know that woman wanted to come with us. She was afraid.” I still struggled with Brita denying her child.

“I’ve been thinking about that,” Coleman said. “Whatever is going on with that bunch, I’m going to find out.”

Jurisdiction or not, Coleman was not a man to be thwarted. “Do you have a plan?” I asked.

“We need more information first.”

“Can I help?”

“Without a doubt. I’m going to the sheriff’s office to make some calls. If those boaters are up to something illegal, I need to know.”

“I’m going to find out what the connection to Bokchito is. And Sally Weathers.”

“How are you going to do that?” he asked.

“When I was a little girl, my mother was working to get better health care for pregnant women in Sunflower County. At the time, several midwives were working the area for those who couldn’t afford to go to the doctor and the hospital. I’ll start there and see where it goes. If Sally Weathers was a healer, it might be a good place to get a lead.”

“Good plan. I’ll give you a call later and check on you.” Coleman kissed my forehead. His brain was already working on what he needed to do.

I watched him drive away with a sense of loss that was cutting. And silly. He was only going a few miles down the road, and I had my own work to do. But sometimes my emotions could be acute. I thought of the young woman, Brita, who’d denied her child and ultimately refused to come with us. What kind of threat would keep me away from someone I loved? The answer was simple: A threat to the life of the child.

I grabbed the keys to the Roadster and whistled up Sweetie Pie. Pluto was already at my feet.
