Makaria had hoped that after the friendship line had been thoroughly crossed in the cave, Thanatos would lighten up around her. She wasn’t looking for them to have an entire conversation about what they were doing, beyond what she should be doing as a new goddess, but she did have an expectation that his mood would shift, and their flirtation could escalate. She felt like she should have been more embarrassed or nervous. After all, this had the potential to complicate her entire situation as a new goddess. Somehow, the new pieces of her power that settled into her body must have pushed her doubt out of the way. For once, Makaria felt…positive. Hopeful. She couldn’t even bring herself to chastise the infatuated way she thought about Thanatos—thoughts that she had previously spent most of her time trying to temper.

Makaria pieced through her thoughts as she waited for him the next morning, as always, at the entrance to Hecate’s courtyard.

You made out with Thanatos. Of all the gods to kiss. It might be an utter disaster moving forward, but I can’t say I wish it never happened.

She felt Thanatos’s power before she saw him, her eyes searching for his presence on the horizon. Dark, blue clouds appeared in front of her, and although she had seen it hundreds of times, she felt her stomach flip when Thanatos materialized out of the smoke. “Are you coming?” Thanatos sounded impassive and bored.

Makaria felt her face flush with embarrassment. Is he rejecting me? She felt a sharp sting of fear, but it was quickly replaced with confusion. If he was so worried about rejection yesterday, he better not be trying to back away from this now. As Makaria walked forward and joined Thanatos, she said nothing, waiting to see what he would do. He grabbed her hand, and she felt them beginning to drift up on the wind, on the way to their next, most pressing assignment. Thanatos said nothing else.

Makaria fought the urge to openly reprimand him as they traveled. She knew him well enough by now to know that his moods were hardly ever as savage as they appeared. If he was hiding from her after their kiss the day before, it was because he was afraid, and Makaria was already willing to fight for her position as a goddess. She’d fight for Thanatos, too.

If you think you can hide from me behind your claws and your blank expression, you’re wrong. You aren’t ready for someone who knows you, to go toe-to-toe with you.

It didn’t take the gods of death long to arrive in the mortal realm. As
