Chapter 19

“I got the info.” A fat envelope landed in the middle of the desk. “The dumb bastard’s still gambling.”

The man behind the desk sighed. “I thought so. Do we know how deep he’s in?”

“Not really, but you know he’s looking to sell part of the team. That will help him keep his head above water.”

“At least for a while, until he pisses that away too.”

“It’ll buy him some time,” the messenger pointed out.

“Maybe.” He slipped the envelope into his center desk drawer. “The Lennox woman should make a decision soon.” He stood, indicating the meeting was over. “I’ll call you.”

The messenger had hoped the boss would share his thoughts on the situation in the arena, but he was being dismissed. It rankled. He had worked hard to make sure everything went smoothly and he still wasn’t allowed into the inner circle. He carefully kept the anger off his face and left the office. He took comfort in the fact that he played an integral part in the operation. He knew he would eventually get his chance to move up. He deserved it.

“Oh, and Jason?”

“Yeah?”

“Be ready. I don’t know how long he’s going to last.”

He smiled. “I’m ready,” he assured him.
