“Damn it!” Ferrero cursed. “This is all fucked up. Someone get me General Jones.”

“I’m here,” Jones said as he entered the room. “What’s happened, Luis?”

“The second team was hit when they were securing the device.”

Concern etched Jones’ face. “Who are these people?”

“We’re not sure. I do have, however, at least one operator down. Possibly KIA and another with him about to be taken into custody by the ATS. And Mary is out there somewhere carrying a suitcase full of nuclear weapon.”

“Who’s down?”

“Pete, Traynor.”

“Have you talked to them?”

Ferrero shook his head. “Whoever did it, jammed the signals. And now that the ATS is on-site it’s virtually impossible.”

“What about Mary?”

“I was about to try her.”

“Do it.”

“Bravo, copy?”

“Copy, Zero.”

Thank God. “Sitrep, Bravo.”

“I’m making for the safehouse with the package, over.”

“OK, send me your coordinates, and I’ll have someone come pick you up.”

“We need to see to Traynor and Teller.”

“I’ll do that,” Jones interrupted.

“The general will see to that, Mary.”

“OK. I’ll wait for a ride then.”

“One’ll be along shortly.”

“I’ll send you my numbers.”

“OK.”

Thurston’s position became clear a minute or so later, and help was dispatched. Ferrero walked across to Swift. “Slick, is there anything you can tell me about these people?”

“I’ve had one hit from facial recognition,” the tech told Ferrero.

“Who?”

“He’s a Chechen by the name of Khasan Islamov. Wanted by the Russians for a bombing in Rostov. Apparently, he has contacts in the world of all things that go bang. Mainly these two.”

Swift went silent, and two pictures came up side-by-side on the screen. “Ibragim Barayev and Madina Umarov. If Islamov is bad, these two are worse. They were behind the bombing of a theatre in Moscow, a hotel in Kyiv Ukraine, another in Volgograd, plus the assassination of more than one Russian minister. Our friend Vlad had sent out more than one kill team over the past few years to find this pair, and none of them have returned.”

“Christ,” Hank Jones hissed.

“Suffice to say,” said Ferrero, “that these two are behind the seizure of the other device.”

“It is a reasonably safe bet,” Swift agreed.

“Which also means that they’re not likely to give up on the suitcase that Mary has.”

“Correctamundo.”

“Tell the pickup team to move faster, the sooner she’s in the safehouse, the better.”

“That still leaves Scimitar and his team,” Jones pointed out.

“Yes, it does.”
