âThose black dogs? They are his slaves. If they disobey he kills them, or puts them in the swamp. For long we have looked for a place to begin our rule. We have chosen Canaan. You whites must go. And since we know that white people can never be driven away from their land, we must kill you all.â117
Fortunately, Canaan and the rest of the surrounding lands are populated by the sons of hardy pioneers. These are proud white men, and although they may speak roughly and be a little uncouth, they are ready and willing to defend their lands with their lives.
Another Southern story of horror, âPigeons from Hell,â sees two New Englanders, John Banner and Griswell, come across a zombie residing in a dilapidated Southern mansion. Also set in that swampy region which straddles Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana, âPigeons from Hellâ concludes that no white American, regardless of their birth, is totally free from the hatred of blacks.
Another Howard classic, âThe Horror from the Mound,â which was published by Weird Tales in 1932, sees a Texas man named Steve Brill destroying an undead aristocrat who had first come to the Southwest in the 16th century. âThe Horror from the Moundâ puts race realism in blunt words, with Howard writing such things as âLatin-Indian devils had no terrors for the Anglo-Saxonâ¦â This story also serves as a reminder for modern American readers that our nation is much, much older than 1776 and the Constitution. Howardâs Texas bore European footprints as far back as 1545. Similarly, âThe Marchers of Valhallaâ makes the case that North America has long been a frontier for Indo-Europeans. The old rivalries between Anglo-Saxon and Celt, Germanic and Latin matter less on the American frontier. Howardâs hardboiled heroes reassert their unique and thoroughly American whiteness while living in the uncivilized borderlands. America is an Anglo-Celtic nation, yes, but its founding stock also includes Spanish and French Catholics and Dutch Calvinists. Americans should not descend into the old, inter-ethnic rivalries of Europe; we are a unique people who should take pride in our Celto-Germanic and Latin (not mestizo) civilization. This pride should be our bulwark against the vileness of the modern, multiculturalist world.
Tragically, despite creating brave heroes every day of his life, Howard could not himself transcend sadness. On June 8, 1936, Hester Howard, Robertâs long-suffering mother, slipped into her final coma. When the nurse told Robert that his mother would never regain consciousness, the 30-year-old writer returned to his Underwood typewriter and penned a short couplet.
