Bork looked at the church, its pristine whiteness centered on a big lawn almost as if the Pulse had not proven that God was a myth that only got in the way.

Russel, who spoke for Millville, had met them at the tracks and walked them to the square. Bork kept his eyes open and roaming, hoping, as he did every time he came here, to spot one of the children he’d traded to Millville over the years. At least three of the twelve were his own flesh and blood. Two boys and a girl.

“We sent a boy in to check him out and he saw the red right away,” Russell said. “On a machete and on the pack.”

“I want to talk to this boy.” Bork stepped closer, looking down at the old man with the flappy neck and scaly skin.

Russel didn’t flinch away from Bork’s bulk. “That’s all he’d tell you. That’s all he saw.”

Bork lifted his gaze to the men and women standing behind the old man. The Millville council. In their khaki pants and freshly laundered shirts they looked so…Before. None of them even carried weapons. He could slaughter all of them in less than ten seconds without even pulling out the ax—he was often faster without it because it tended to get stuck in people. He smiled, thinking it through. He’d start by slicing Russell open from crotch to neck. Then he’d spin around him to slash the taller woman’s neck while the old man’s guts were still uncoiling onto the grass.

His heart pounded with the thought and he put his hand on his knife and wrapped his finger’s around the handle. Russel flinched now, stepping back, hands lifting as if he planned to protect his followers.

Bork smiled, then relaxed, his point made that Russell only lived because Bork allowed it. He left Russell and his people there and joined his squad at the church’s front door. “Shaker goes in this door and Mick stands outside it. Sully goes in the back with two archers and leaves Dobbin outside the door to guard it. The traveler’s sleeping on the fourth pew on the right.” Sending four men in was overkill, even for a man who’d taken out three pups. But better safe than sorry.

“You want us to capture him or kill him?” Shaker asked

He’d love to torture this guy for a week, but any man who could kill three Red pups was too dangerous to mess around with.

“Kill him.”
