Foxglove had been a queen.

True, she only had become queen after their mother had drained her power and left her in the barren North Country without her memory, but she had been a queen nonetheless.

It also meant that Mrs. E had been a princess, which was only natural, given that Sir E was a prince. Yet another way that she was Emmazel’s superior.

Oh, she claimed that a princess was no different than any other girl, but the fact remained that she had been raised among the whirl of society and knew how to handle herself with grace and decorum no matter what.

Having grown up in a tower, where socialization had entirely different rules, Emmazel found it infuriating to watch. It was almost impossible to hate the woman, and it only made Emmazel feel all the more inferior.

But the week sped by, and Mrs. E was only ever kind, amiable, and steady. Meanwhile, Emmazel felt increasingly out of her element as she compared herself to the younger woman. Mrs. E was only twenty-nine and had already vanquished a villain, claimed a throne, married and had two children, and was a trusted advisor for not one but four neighboring kingdoms.

All while Emmazel lived in a tower and tricked a succession of lords into marrying her commoner companions.

At least most of Emmazel’s companions and their husbands were grateful for her intervention. No complaints had reached her, save for her mistake with Heather.

She swept all of her worries away as the day of the party arrived. It was as glorious a day as she could have ever hoped, with the Flaxseeds’ ballroom packed full of people eager to meet the witch of the tower for themselves. Emmazel wore a beautiful green dress far finer than anything she’d ever owned before, and Kendra’s own handmaid had done her long, golden hair in an intricate weave of braids and curls.

Yet, as she stood awkwardly in the receiving line, trying to make small talk with a constant stream of people who had come to gawk at her, her eye couldn’t help but often stray to Mrs. E, drifting effortlessly through the crowd, chatting easily with everyone. She proved as much a draw as Emmazel herself. After all, a rose vine grew out of her head.

“Oh, look at you! You look positively radiant tonight! Why, one would never know that, just weeks ago, you never wished to leave your tower, no matter what anyone else might say!”

Emmazel’s gaze snapped away from Mrs. E as Anna and Lord Westbrook were the next in line for her to greet.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” she breathed. “I never thought so many people could fit in a single room!”

“It’s quite a sight, isn’t it?” Anna let go of her husband’s arm to pull Emmazel into a hug. “I will confess that most ballrooms are larger than this and better able to handle such a crowd. You’re quite the draw, my dear!”

“Well, myself and the Gardener.” Emmazel bit her lip as her gaze went to Mrs.
