* Recurring characters in Irish folklore, often described as old men astride monstrous horses made from cloud. Their reputation has diminished somewhat, as sightings, for some reason, have grown fewer and farther between in recent generations, but it was once common practice in the southwest of Ireland to shelter at home when the wind grows wild and beithíoch clouds mass overhead, a formation that is long and stringy, like a horse’s mane. It was said that the elder huntsmen were riding on those days, and while deer were their preferred quarry, they would hunt mortals if the fancy took them.
