By the end of the month, thoughts of Lox weren’t as frequent. Lessons were getting harder and Dojo practice was every other day, so Emily was either busy doing homework or training. The training was taking a toll on her body. Emily was in constant pain, which was affecting her sleep and she sometimes fell asleep in lessons. Most of the teachers were very understanding, apart from Mr Waternham who taught Water Studies.

Emily hated the sound of the subject from the start. Mr Waternham told the class that every warrior has the natural ability to breathe under water. They would spend the year learning to breathe and building their confidence under water, as it was easier said then done and those who progressed would learn to battle under water.

Emily had hated water since the age of nine, when she almost drowned in her indoor swimming pool so the idea of being under water filled her with dread. Emily couldn’t grasp how it was possible for warriors to breathe under water and truthfully she didn’t want to try it out to see if she could.

It had been months since Emily had started Water Studies and she had still not mastered breathing under water. She was sitting in the corner watching Michella climb into the see-through tank. Emily yawned. She was finding it hard to focus. She rested her head against the wall and closed her eyes.

“Miss Knight!”

Emily jumped up.

“I hope you were looking closely at Miss Kinkle. It’s your turn.”

“Crap,” Emily muttered.

She walked slowly to the tank avoiding her classmates’ eyes. She bent her legs and flew up, hovering over the tank as Michella had done. Emily looked down at the water and groaned. She slowly lowered herself so she was in the warm water. Emily took quick, deep breaths and looked pleadingly at Mr Waternham.

“All the way in,” he said, with his arms crossed.

Emily sighed and took a deep breath and went under. The water instantly ran up her nose and into her ears. She opened her mouth a little bit and the water gushed in. Emily swam to the surface and coughed violently and spat out the water.

“Mr Notting, can you educate Miss Knight on why she can never drown?” Mr Waternham said to Jason, who caught Emily’s eye and blushed.

“Because when water enters our mouth, we have a gag reflex. Parts of our throats close, so water can’t enter. It’s the same reason why babies can breathe under water?”

“Did you hear that Miss Knight? The same thing a baby can do, so next time pay attention or I’ll make sure you’re left under the water,” Mr Waternham said.

Jason caught her eye again and mouthed, “Sorry.”

At dinner, Laton Chin mentioned a costume party on Revolution Night. It was a night to celebrate the leaders of the Warrior Revolution, Idris Jenkint, Bernard Ogragon, Rose-Marie Mentorawth, Joseph Berbinin, Arthur Linktie and Ce-Ce Pentwon and would be held in a few weeks. It was a tradition at the school but most of the first years were oblivious to this.
