Chapter Twenty

When Aubrey finaly emerged from his room, pale

and sweating, he headed straight into the kitchen

without even noticing Cal sitting at the table. Paul heard

him rummaging around in the fridge and realized they

hadn't stocked up on Gatorade. Nathan had jumped up

and folowed Aubrey, though, and he hustled him back

out and pushed him down into a chair.

"Sit, stay. Let your boyfriend distract you, I'l be

back in a minute." He patted Aubrey's shoulder, waved

a hand at Cal, and headed back to the kitchen.

Paul had about ten seconds to enjoy the open shock

on Aubrey's face before Nathan was back. He plopped

a bottle of water and a bottle of orange juice down in

front of Aubrey, said "Drink!" and vanished once more.

"Wait, how--?" Before he could babble anything else

undignified, Aubrey took a long breath, popped the top

on the water bottle and half emptied it in a long series of

slugs, then tried again. "Why are you here, and how

much damage did you leave behind you?"

Cal smirked and propped his chin in one hand.

"Hey, if you're not happy to see me I can fly right back.

No damage, no chaos, nothing running amok that I

know of."

"Smart arse. Get over here." Aubrey took another

long drink, then dragged a grinning Cal down by the

ears and into a kiss that lasted a good minute.

Nathan came in just as they were breaking up for

breath. He set a peanut butter sandwich down in front

of Aubrey and said, "Eat," then went back to his own

seat.

Water, sugar, salt, protein, plus more carbs in the

bread and some random vitamins. Likely Nathan was

used to providing for his friends after they'd been

casting. The sandwich was a good idea; a PBJ would

be even better, although that was probably just a

personal preference.

Aubrey was saying, "So did the restaurant burn

down, then?"

"If so it was within the last few hours, and there'd be

a message on my phone. As outrageous as it is to

imagine, I came up because I missed you." Cal dragged

his chair over next to Aubrey and puled him close. He

was eating while wrapped in Cal's arms and didn't seem

to mind the awkwardness.

Aubrey swalowed a bite and said, "I suspect a

deeper motive, but for now I'l just have to put up with

your presence. You can make yourself useful -- I've

come up with a way of tracking large-scale magic usage

within a forty mile radius. I was going to layer in another

spel to actualy record pings so we'l know something's

happened even if we're not watching at the moment, but

you can do that; I have a map you can use as a

template."

"I live to serve, Master," Cal intoned.

"Wel, someone should." Paul was pretty sure

Aubrey was half joking with that, but probably only

half. Aubrey took a swig of juice, then another bite of

his sandwich, then relaxed into Cal's arms and let his

eyes close. He realy did look worn out. Paul couldn't

even imagine where to start on that kind of a spel.

"Wil that show us fey activity?" asked Rory. "Or just

spel casting?"

And... that's a realy good question, Paul thought.

Aubrey said, "Just casting, although if the fey are

flinging large clouds of magic around, it'l pick that up

too.
