CHAPTER 13

The sound of his phone chirping, alerting him to an incoming text, woke Max from a deep sleep. He rolled over and reached for Romero, only to find a cold and empty bed. Grabbing his phone from the nightstand, Max checked his messages, groaning loudly. The door to the bathroom opened, and Romero stepped out, followed by a rolling cloud of steam. “Morning sunshine. You don’t sound happy.”

“Sebastian sent me a text I’d rather not have received. This is not how I wanted to start my day!” Max’s complaint brought a smile to Romero’s lips as he slipped his legs into a pair of navy track pants. “I don’t like waking up to find you gone and then being harassed by my boss.”

“You were sleeping so soundly, I didn’t want to wake you. I got up early and ran five miles. By the way, I hate running in this neighborhood. There’s no challenge—it’s boring. Running in my neighborhood is like an obstacle course. You have to dodge all kinds of things. Like tricycles left on the sidewalk, stray dogs chasing you, cars parked illegally blocking sidewalks and streets, and little old ladies that want you to stop and chat with them on the porch. I’m telling you, it’s tough.”

Max chuckled at the image of Romero hurdling over plastic kiddie pools and stray cats and dogs nipping his heels as he maneuvered the streets of Westchester. “I’m sorry my neighborhood isn’t dangerous enough to keep you in top shape. I can think of other ways to work you out though, if you’re interested.”

Romero kneeled on the bed, crawling over Max to straddle his waist. “I bet your ideas are very creative.” He took the phone from Max’s grip and placed it on the nightstand. “What did your boss want that has you frowning like that?”

“He invited us to a barbecue on Saturday.”

Romero smiled. “That sounds nice. Why don’t you look like that sounds nice?”

“I’m sorry, did I say invite? I meant mandated,” Max sneered. “Don’t get me wrong, I usually enjoy these things. But I have a feeling this one might go differently.”

“Because of me?” Romero looked confused.

“It’s not you, it’s them. Sebastian is a bit of a dick, and Russ is nosy as fuck. Emma will have us married off before I finish grilling the burgers, and Jennie is going to spoil your diet with tons of baked goods. You met Avery, he’s cool. But he’s going to throw me under the bus first chance he gets, then he’ll back it up over me and have another go. He hates to be the center of attention, and I think he’s bringing his new girlfriend, so he’ll make sure it stays focused on me instead.”

Romero smiled unsympathetically. “Poor baby. I bet they’ve waited years to meet your special someone. Let them have their fun.” He leaned down for a kiss, grinding his hips against Max’s, teasing him as their lips met.

Max searched his eyes, smiling as he softly whispered, “My special someone, huh? I like that.
