âYou miss them, donât you?â
I looked up from my breakfast to find Jade and Celeste staring at me with big, concerned gazes from across the kitchen table. It was the end of my first week without Georgie (and Foster). The new nanny started a week ago and, other than catching glimpses of them in their yard, I hadnât seen much of the Darwins.
âYou should go visit. Iâm sure Georgie misses you,â Jade insisted.
I shook my head. âI havenât been invited.â
And stupidly, Iâd expected Foster to text me at some point and ask me to come over or grab a milkshake with them ⦠or something.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
âItâs a Sunday. Theyâll be home, youâre home,â Celeste said, âWhy donât you make your lemonade and take it over?â
I grimaced. âLike a desperate spinster from the nineteen fifties?â
âThatâs severe and unfair.â Celeste made a face.
âYou know what I mean. I have to be careful with how my behavior appears.â
Jade cocked her head to the side. âWhen have you ever cared what people think?â
âNot people. Georgie. And Foster. I donât want to be that middle-aged woman who canât take a hint.â Melancholy was a sharp ache near my heart. âNo, I wonât go over uninvited.â
My sisters exchanged a look as if I were a problem to be solved.
âItâs not a big deal.â
âTell that to your mopey face.â
I scrunched my nose up at Celeste. âStop being childish.â
âPot Meet Kettle.â
Jade pushed away from the table. âWell, Iâm meeting Colt in half an hour. Weâre making final decisions at the venue today.â
âGood luck. Have fun.â
My sister paused and turned toward us. âI promised I wouldnât say anything but I feel like if I donât, you and Foster might miss an opportunity here.â
Frowning, I turned in my seat to meet her gaze. âWhatâs going on?â
Jadeâs eyes lit up. âFoster likes you.â
My pulse skittered. âWhat?â
She nodded, barely containing her excitement. âHe told Colt heâs extremely attracted to you.â
Extremely attracted to me.
Well, I knew that.
The man did not hide that fact.
But there was a difference between like and attraction. âAttracted to me or likes me?â
âWell⦠both.â
âSo why hasnât he done anything about it?â Celeste asked. âHe doesnât seem like the kind of guy who doesnât go after what he wants.â
I gestured to my younger sister as if to say, âYes, thank you, I agree.â
Jade narrowed her eyes on Celeste before turning back to me. âI donât know why heâs holding back. I think Colt knows but he wonât tell me. But maybe he thinks you think heâs not mature enough. I mean, you did call him a man child. Several times.â
Hope was a wretched blossom blooming deep within me. I tried to shove it down. âItâs more than likely Iâm the opposite of the kind of woman he usually dates.â
âIn what way?â Celeste frowned.
âI am neither in my twenties, beautifully athletic, a college graduate, and nor am I from a good east coast society family.â
âYou donât really think that stuff matters to Foster, do you?â Jade retorted. âHe had a child when he was still in college.
