Chapter 17

"Lotari's home!" Alyra tucked the Ledge-o-graph under her arm, bounded from her sleeping mat and rushed out of the tent to find the campsite empty. The morning sun was high enough to cast beams of light through the tall spruce. A small fire burned where a pot of last night's stew remained. Her shoulders sagged. She would need to clean that up before she could prepare the next meal. Oh, but she missed DezPierre and his wonderful cooking skills. Taking a peek at the large amount of remaining stew in the pot, she figured everyone else must miss him, too.

"Oh well, guess Tare was right. Princesses aren't expected to cook." She hated that she'd never been taught the simple skills other girls her age took for granted.

She returned to the tent and changed into her traveling pants and a loose-fitting shirt she secured with her belt. Even though she only used the dagger Jerin gave her for chopping meat and vegetables, Ethan still insisted she kept it on her at all times. That way, she mused, if anyone did attack her, she could make them a salad or something. Opposite the dagger, she kept a pouch full of small white stones from the King's Highway and her trusty slingshot.

Alyra took her Ledge-o-graph and went outside. Stirring the thick, lumpy stew, she deemed it good enough for breakfast, until she took the first bite. How did Dez manage to make food taste so good while the best she could manage was a dinner that tasted like rolled up paper? Dumping the remaining slop into the fire, she decided to search for herbs like the Healer Marya used when she cooked.

"About time you got up." Her brother grumbled as he came from the woods. "I'm going to get some sleep."

"Where's Ri? And Tare?"

"Riyah is surveying the land. Probably has gone to find a place where he can talk to Issah or King Shaydon. I have no idea where the outsider is. He took his hunting gear and left before the sun rose."

She wanted to share her news about Lotari but knew Ethan didn't care about her centaur friends. Neither did Tarek. Riyah always disappeared early in the mornings, and always returned knowing where they needed to go next, or how far they needed to travel before reaching the next settlement.

Since the Elderad had healed her mind, Tarek had been distant and quiet. So, she'd returned Riyah's kindness by avoiding him as much as possible. Her heart sank over her behavior. The Elderad was right, of course. She needed to come clean with Tarek. Needed to be honest about her abilities and stop hiding them.

And Tarek needed to come clean with her about their life in Racah.

Pouring herself a cup of hot tea, she sat down to read Lotari's note again before responding. When she got to the part about the Dwarf King being in league with Darnel, a shudder ran down her back. He'd mentioned before that the dwarfs were causing trouble for the clan in Wilderland.
